I think its a good move for the Mets. Randolph has been third base coach and then bench coach for the best manager in the majors, Joe Torre. The rumor is also that they might bring along Popeye as bench coach which would be awesome. The rumor is also that the Mets are making Carlos Beltran their top FA and they have the money to spend.

I agree that Willie Randolph's hiring is a good move.
Richie Sexon is rumored to be interested im coming to Shea as well, but I wouldn't hold out much hope of signing Carlos Beltran. If he is to move from Houston (a legitimate playoff contender) he'll likely move to another legitimate playoff contender. I doubt if the Mets brass would be able to match King George's offer for his services.

If the Mets get Beltran they are a playoff contender.

I don't think the mets get Beltran. From all I have heard the Phillies and Yankees both are promising really, really, really big money.

Beltran wants a 10 year deal worth at least $150M. The only teams that would be able to put that sort of money up would be the Yankees, Red Sox (although they are not even mentioned as suitors), Cubs, and Astros. The Astros owner and Beltran's agent, Scott Boras, have indicated a willingness to work out a deal quickly.
The Mets may want Beltran, but Beltran doesn't really need them. He wants to play on a contending team right away and the Mets have too many holes to contend soon.
