Braves Cut Ties With Giles

When I read this, all I could say was WOW!!! I guess the Braves are serious about cutting payroll.

wow, i thought this guy was the best young 2b in the league just a year or two ago. that title now belongs of course to the guy from the phillies whose name i cant remember right now, but things must have really fallen apart for giles.

Chase Utley.

Giles had an off year and the Braves didnt want to pay him what he would have gotten in arby...about 5 million. Kelly Johnson of all people is rumored to take over the 2nd base duties this upcoming season for the Braves.

When did Kelly Johnson play 2B last? He did OK in the outfield for the Braves, but that is getting a bit crowded now.

Kelly played a bit of second early in his minor league career but from what I've read wasn't very good. He's been working with Glenn Hubbard this winter to "relearn" second and he is getting some good reports on his progress. We shall see. If...and thats a big IF...he makes the team as a starting second baseman that will fill the leadoff hole as well thus killing 2 birds with one stone. Kelly has a ton of potential...maybe he breaks out this year.

According to ESPN, Martin Prado is listed as the #1 2B for the Braves. I might consider Willy Aybar there as well. Both Prado and Aybar have played 2B quite a bit and are smooth fielders. Johnson may be best served to go back to Richmond (or lower in the minors) to learn the position. Not as much pressure there and a better chance for coaches to work with him every day. He could be recalled by the middle of the season if things go well.
