Joe Thomas - Draft Projection - NFL Impact

Joe Thomas

Offensive Tackle - Wisconsin
  • Height - 6'8"
  • Weight - 313
  • 40 Time - 4.92 (combine time)
  • 2006 AP All-American First Team
  • 2006 Walter Camp All American Team
  • 2006 1st Team All Big-10
  • 2006 Outland Trophy Winner
Draft Projection - Top 5

NFL Impact - Joe Thomas is the elite offensive lineman in the 2007 NFL draft. Thomas has great size and agility and will be able to play the critical position of Left tackle at the next level. He is a great all around prospect who excels at both pass and run blocking. He is only one year removed from a torn ACL he suffered at the end of the 2005 season making durability a concern. With that said, he is still the elite OT prospect that GM drool over, with mutliple top 5 teams needing drastic improvements on the offensive line, it is doubtful Thomas falls out of the top 5.

What are your thoughts on Joe Thomas? Who could be calling his name in April?

You know Cleveland would love to get this guy, and I think they would be out of their minds to let him slide past, if he makes it to them.

I agree, perfect fit. Another team who be think it's christmas in April if he would fall to them is Arizona!!! Doubt he falls to them though, but if he does, he's definatly off the board.

I could see this kid playing for any of the top 5 teams to be honest!!

Obviously, the first stop would be Cleveland at #3, but if they're really considering taking Branch here, then I don't see him getting past Arizona at #5. I think the early trade would honestly be a team trying to come up and get Thomas at #4 from Tampa, but it's unlikely they trade that pick in the case that Calvin Johnson's still on the board.

It's time for Detroit to start doing things right and it should start with Thomas at #2....

I think it's too bad that Thomas won't make it to #9.

I think we all pretty much know deep down Detroit will be selecting Calvin Johnson. They desperately need a 1st round WR..............

Not sure if anybody has been listening, but the biggest knock on Joe Thomas being a top 5 pick was rumors that he lack in his reach (was said that he had short arms). Should be no worries after the combine, with his arms measuring 33 1/4 inches, and hands measuring over 10 inches.

From his first interview, it sounds like there is little chance of him dropping past #3 in the draft. When asked about Cleveland, he said he felt he could come in and start right away at Right Tackle, since Backus is already there at Left Tackle. Also said he would like the opportunity to compete even in Cleveland for the Left Tackle job.

When asked about the Raiders: (I liked these questions)

Q: Are you worried about going to a bad Raider team?
A: I'm not worried at all. Like I said, I'm a different player
than Robert Gallery, I respect his game and I really enjoyed
watching him all through college, but I think I'm definitely
a different kind of player.

Q: How are you different than Robert Gallery?
A: Well, I think I'm a very technically sound offensive tackle, I think
I have a great work ethic, I think I really study hard, study my
opponent hard, and I think I'm a pretty athletic offensive lineman, too.

40 time updated to reflect combine result. Thomas ran a 4.92, that is moving for a guy this big.

Another big lineman getting blow the 5.0 mark was Ryan Kalil, running a 4.96.
