JaMarcus Russell - Draft Projection - NFL Impact

JaMarcus Russell

Quarterback - LSU
  • Height - 6'5"
  • Weight - 252
  • 40 Time - 4.75
  • 2006 1st Team All-SEC Team
  • 2006 Davey O'Brien Award Semi-Finalist
2006 Stats:
  • 3129 passing yards
  • 28 Touchdowns, 8 Interceptions
  • 167 Passer rating
Draft Projection - Top 10

NFL Impact - It is hard to compare JaMarcus Russell to any quarterback at the NFL level. Many compare him to Culpepper, but I do not see the resemblance. Strong arm and quick feet. Good balance when throwing on the move, moves the pocket well, but is not a run threat. Weight will be a concern because he simlply cannot get any bigger without risking a loss in quickness. Could start as a rookie on a team with a solid offensive line, would need to be worked in slowly on most teams.

What type of impact will JaMarcus Russell make at the NFL level? Which team (s) do you see looking to draft him?

He reminds me of Jared Lorenzen, oonly better. He will go no further than the Raiders. Al Davis must be drooling over this kid.

Really like this kid, but i do think he's closer to Culpepper then you claim. The thing that remains to be seen is if he can overcome the achelies heal of C-Pepp.....Can he read a defense?

If he can, he'll be a Stud! If not, then you have another Culpepper.

I think this guy is unique and hard to compare. I think he will have a ring on his finger in the next few years if the team he gets to has a good surrounding cast and defense.

That is my thought.

As for the comparisons to Culpepper, Culpepper is a running threat, Russell is not. Russell will be staying in the pocket for the most part.

There were concerns the first year Russell started (sophomore year) in regards to slow reads, but from all accounts I have read and seen, he pretty much erased those concerns, a problem that Culpepper entered the league with and still hasn't fixed.

I 100% agree that you can't compare him to Culpepper for the same reasons. I think he's closer to Elway. This guy is Huge and when it's 4th and inches I wouldn't hesitate to call a QB sneak. He's going to be hard to take down. He's cool in the pocket and he's got a cannon. The reads first and tries to throw, if he has to he can run too but as a last resort.

Culpepper was not a match to me either.

Actually, Leftwich or Boller were more of what I was thinking. Russell seems to be better at picking up defenses though, and a quicker release than Leftwich or Boller. He almost puts me in mind of a very young Marino...but he is alot more athletic.

Am I the only guy who thinks Russell is awfully overweight? And I don't think the comparisons to Culpepper are that far off base. Culpepper was never Michael Vick mobile, he was just incredibly hard to bring down and rather quick for his size. Russell is the same kind of threat, he just needs to lose some weight.

I too think Oakland is loving teh idea of grabbing him. They have so many needs, but QB is so unstable in Raiderland for a few years, they simply cannot pass him up.

Post Russell dazzling in LSU workout

More than 100 representatives from NFL teams descended on the LSU campus Wednesday to watch the auditions of quarterback JaMarcus Russell and three of his former Tigers teammates who should come off the board within the first 40 picks of April's draft.

First-year coach Lane Kiffin of the Raiders, who hold the No. 1 overall pick and are expected to use it on Russell, was in attendance.

Russell weighed in at 256 pounds -- nine pounds lighter than at the scouting combine just more than two weeks ago and spot on his playing weight -- and ran a 4.84-second 40-yard dash.

"That's a pretty good time," said Todd McShay, senior draft analyst for ESPN's Scouts Inc.

Russell threw 75 passes during his session and missed on only about four or five, according to McShay.

"His passing session was the most impressive of all the pro days I've been to," McShay said. "His footwork for such a big quarterback was surprising. ... We all knew coming in that his arm strength is extraordinary. The ball just explodes out of his hands."

Other notable measurements for Russell were his arm length of 341/2 inches -- "Left tackle size," McShay said -- and his hand size of 91/2 inches -- "Big, but not the biggest," McShay said. "Just above the average for a quarterback."

I guess this is the part where someone (me) mentions that arm strength and 40 times do not an all-pro make?

Let's just hope for everyone's sake that if Oakland takes him, they don't try to start him from day 1.

David Carr's brother posts on the Texans MB.

He posted something oblique about how the Raiders want Carr so they can go Calvin Johnson. That the Texans didn't want to let go of Carr until they had more at QB. And that the Raiders didn't want to wait until closer to the draft.

Well, with the Schaub thing, maybe something happens with the Raiders. The Texans don't have to pretend anymore that they are okay with Carr staying.

I posted something awhile back about some Vick-to-the-Raiders scenarios, then some Carr-to-the-Raiders scenarios. It makes too much sense to actually happen, I guess.

I was thinking Carr and Houston's 3rd rounder for Randy Moss and Oakland's 2nd round pick, which amounts to a late first rounder. Then you can basically count on Calvin Johnson to the Raiders. I would assume Carr and Moss have similar salary cap numbers.
