what about the bronco rumor profootball talk
POSTED 4:56 p.m. EDT, April 23, 2007
BRONCOS WANT JOHNSON
A reader tells us that there's a rumor being reported on 950 AM in Denver that the Broncos are trying to make a play for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, in an effort to land receiver Calvin Johnson.
A source with knowledge of the discussions tells us that the rumor is dead-on accurate, and that an offer has been made by the Broncos to the Lions.
Per the rumor and based on what we've heard, the Broncos have offered their first-round, second-round, and third-round pick in the 2007 draft and their first-rounder in 2008 for the No. 2 spot.
The Lions, we're told, are concerned that the No. 21 overall spot would put them too low to land one of the players whom they covet. The Lions' goal in trading down is/has been to get more picks, and to still get one of the players they want, but at a lower salary slot.
So the deal might hinge on the ability of the Lions to line up another deal that would allow them to move back up a bit.
The Broncos hold the No. 21 overall pick in round one, the No. 56 overall pick (No. 24 in round two), and the No. 70 and No. 86 overall picks (No. 6 and No. 23, respectively, in round three). We don't know which of the third-rounders has been offered.
Under the trade chart, the deal might favor the Lions. But different teams value picks from the next year's draft differently; some teams downgrade the points by a full round, making a 2008 first-rounder the equivalent of a 2007 second-rounder. The other problem here is that no one will know where the Broncos will draft in round one until the 2007 season ends.
The entire deal would be contingent on the Raiders not drafting Calvin Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. We're currently told that the Raiders are expected to strike a deal on a contract with quarterback JaMarcus Russell before Saturday.
However, the fact that former Raiders coach/current Broncos coach Mike Shanahan apparently has a bee in his butt for Johnson could cause Raiders owner Al Davis to think twice about whether he would prefer to have Johnson on his team -- or to have to face him twice per year.

Here's some Lions rumors going around at Mlive, but the guy used to be a KC scout, and has a good reputation for the truth:You got questions, Gresh got answers - Sports-Boards

I love the offers from Atlanta and Miami. This gives us good deals no matter who Oakland takes. Pittsburghs offer is hard for me to believe, and I don't think Detroit would want to slide that far anyway. If you read all the posts here, the guy seems to know what he is talking about. I hope these are true.

This does have a good list of Lion rumors:

1) Oakland has started talks with Russell
2) Oakland has contacted Cleveland about trading down to 3 on the assumption Cleveland would want Russell
3) 8 teams talking to Detroit is a slight exagerration, unless they've forgotten to report a contact. There are 7
4) Nobody wants to trade with Detroit until either Oakland signs their guy or Detroit is on the clock for fear someone would leapfrog them (makes sense)
5) The suitors are: Tampa, Atlanta, Washington, Miami, Houston, Carolina and Pittsburgh.
6) Atlanta has a firm offer of their 1st, 2 2nds, and a 1st next year for Detroit's 1 and 4 this year--supposing Calvin is there
7) Tampa has a firm offer of their 1st, 2 2nds and a 5th for Detroit's 1/4--supposing Calvin is there
8) Miami has a firm offer of a 1st, a 2nd (their late 2nd), a 3rd, and a first and 3rd next year--supposing Russell is there.
9) Washington is trying to move players of some sort along with their 1st
10) Pittsburgh is offering a 1st and a 2nd, and a 1st and 2nd next year--supposing Calvin is there
11) Houston...I don't know what they're offering, but they're eyeing Peterson
12) Don't know anything about Carolina. Couldn't scrounge anything up.
13) Detroit appears to have narrowed their guys down to 3--Adams, LeRon Landry, and Leon Hall

Houston has been mentioned as looking to move up for Peterson. You should probably add the Buffalo Bills to the move up for Peterson list.

Falcons could be leaning towards DT Amobi Okoye, Louisville.

I see you lurking GlennsPatriots, how about it? Two first rounders, staying put or moving up?

Wow, I just can't see why the Broncos would want to move up for Calvin Johnson, at all.

That said, the Lions would be insane to not take 2 first round picks, a 2nd an a 3rd.

He of course was asked about Calvin Johnson and said he wasn't going to pay that price tag, but could very likely see the team moving up to the 10-15 range for the right player, possibly a little higher depending on the price.
The Steelers are sounding like they feel the same way about not needing to fill any big holes also. But it sounds like they are likely to use this reasoning as a motivation to move down and get extra picks instead.

Rumors are flying that Bengals may not be locked into a Def. player at 18. Strong speculation of if Ginn drops he could be a target. Supposedly they are also high on Olsen at Te.

With Chris Henry gone for 1/2 a season this could be a likely switch of priorities.

Listening to ESPN today, several sources have been saying that the Raiders have appeared to switch their focus to Calvin Johnson.

Of course, the sources are either guessing just like everyone else, or they are purposely leaking information.

RB Adrian Peterson seems to think he will end up on the Cards or the Browns.

Smokescreen? If they draft a QB nobody cares but if teams think they will draft CJ then the Raiders might get a big deal withh alot of picks.

Official report on ESPN radio this morning had contract talks starting with Russell and Johnson, and contact to Quinn's agent. None of this confirmed.

Almost sounds like a Houston type situation, where they want to make sure they can sign whoever they get early.

My understanding from multiple sources is...if Russell is there they may take him...otherwise its between OT or Peterson. First, they know Calvin Johnson is gone by #2 either by Detroit, Oakland or whoever trades with Detroit. They feel Russell will be gone to Oakland. So that leaves Peterson as the likely candidate for Cle. This for Scouts inc, PFW, and some Cleveland radio stations.

I personally will be waiting to see if Laron Landry drops past Atlanta, which means he probably falls out of the top 10. If he does, I think you see Jerry Jones on the telephone doing whatever it takes to move up and get him. I think this has to be the top tier player that Dallas would be most interested in.

Looks almost like a sure thing that Chicago will be moving Lance Briggs this week or by draft day as well, most likely to move up in the 1st round.

Because De Anglelo denies it? That is probably a sure sign something is brewing.
