Evaluate the Texans Draft

I'm doing a write up tonight for the FanHouse and am curious what non-Texans fans think of what they did. Team with a lot of needs obviously.

Funny, a team that everyone says has a horribly offensive line didnt draft an offensive linemen until their 2nd 5th round pick. I personally don't see this as really a bad move since they drafted some guys last year, and I think the talent on the offensive line is much better than publicly perceived.

Amobi Okoye - This is quite simply a stud pick. Excellent choice by the Texans, and if Mario Williams has his foot problem taken care of, the Texans defensive line, and overall defense, looks to be very good this year.
I think you have to give the Vikings a little credit though for doing Houston a favor here by drafting Adrian Peterson, because I feel that Houston would have pulled the trigger on Peterson if he had been there.

Jacoby Jones
- Addressed a need for a kick returner and added some depth at receiver. Jones could develop into a starter, but more likely the third receiver in a 3 WR set.

Fred Bennett - Going to have to wait an see on this guy. Bennett has some very good coverage skills, but they are going to have to improve as he is a cover corner, and nothing more, so he must be perfect at what he does. I personally like cornerbacks that are also effective against the run unless they can truly be a "shutdown" corner. If he can develop into that, good pick. If not, it was just a second day pick so no big loss.

Brandon Harrison - Pretty big strong safety. nfldraftscout.com and other places are projecting this this is a guy better suited to bulk up and play linebacker in a cover 2. Playing or Stanford, haven't seen much of him at all.

Brandon Frye - Excellent value in the 5th. Frye has great upper body strength, and will contibute on the offensive line as a rookie. Doubtful that he will start as a rookie, but it isn't out of the question.

Still a couple picks left, but overall, I think the Texans did well in this draft, better than last year.

The only Texans pick I care to comment on is their 1st pick. Very smart move picking up Okoye, they can put him right next to Williams and have a nasty little rush going on every down.

Mike gave a nice analysis here and I have to agree that it was a nice draft for the Texans. They grabbed another O lineman in the 6th from Texas no less.

Studdard, Kasey G Texas

At least they are using some picks on the O Line which has been ignored for too long. Nice additions on both sides of the board. Good draft, will the Texans turn the corner, at the very least they should be in the corner.

Studdard is a pick of familiarity, son of a former Bronco. Could evolve into a decent depth guy, not sure he will ever be starter potential though. Plays hard

Yeah, Kubiak said he remembers him as a baby. He picked David Anderson last year in the 7th round as someone he remembered growing up, and Anderson stayed with the team and contributed a little.

Doesn't really suit what the Texans say they want in linemen though as far as athleticism.

Here's my draft grade post: B

NFL FanHouse Draft Grade: Houston Texans - Sports Blog - The FanHouse

Okoye is SUCH a Bob McNair sort of pick. Smart, football smart, over-acheiver, wants to be a role model.

Apparently, ST coach Joe Marciano likes Jacoby Jones a lot. He was the one who discovered Jerome Mathis out of Hampton and got him in the pro bowl. If Marciano likes Jones, that is a good thing.

Bennett and Dunta Robinson were friends from SC--Robinson mentored Bennett when Bennett was a freshman. That sort of relationship might be helpful.

Offensive line is going to be interesting. They have a ton of guys on the roster and it is hard to figure who is going to go where. I am guessing Charles Spencer will be starting the season on the PUP given the type of injury he has and how hard it is for a man that size to rehab that sort of injury.

I have no problem with giving The Texans a grade B on the draft. Add what they did in Free Agency and I would say the whole off-season effort is a B.

Shawn Barber, LB Philadelphia Unrestricted
Jordan Black, OT Kansas City Unrestricted
Danny Clark, LB New Orleans Unrestricted
Ron Dayne, RB Houston Unrestricted
Ahman Green, RB Green Bay Unrestricted
Vonta Leach, RB Houston Restricted
Dexter McCleon, DB Houston Unrestricted
Matt Schaub, QB Atlanta Trade
Chad Stanley, P Houston Unrestricted
Departures David Carr, QB (CAR); Antwan Peek, LB (CLE);
Lewis Sanders, DB (ATL); Domanick Williams, RB
